The summer has arrived, marking in many respects the end of a very different annual events programme for many of our groups within the BCS Community. The summer is also heralding the cautious unlocking of pandemic restrictions across the United Kingdom.
We have all been affected in various ways by the unprecedented stresses and strains that the pandemic has wrought on us. We need to take this time to recharge and reflect on the journeys we have been through over the last eighteen months. We are urging Member Groups to take a cautious approach in returning to face-to-face events in the autumn. Safety remains our paramount concern, and we will issue advice as the situation becomes clearer.
The Institute is adopting a new strategic plan, which we will share at an online convention in the autumn. As the BCS Community, we need to align behind this new direction as the Institute strives to return to growth in terms of membership. We will all have a role in making our professional body relevant to the IT community and wider Society.
I am humbled by the fantastic efforts made by our volunteers and staff in keeping up the momentum in what has been, without doubt, one of the most difficult periods in our recent history.
You are an amazing group of volunteers to work with. This fact assures me that we will return on the other side of the summer, ready to start shaping the future. I know the Community Board wants me to thank you all for your hard work and to wish you a relaxing break before the new events programmes start in September and we align behind the Institute’s new strategic direction.
Best wishes
Alastair Revell Vice-President for Community
Prepare for your AGM
It's nearly that time of year again.
From September, it's time to organise your group's AGM to report to your members on your previous year's activities and elect your committee for the 2021-2022 season.
Please include the following as part of your AGM:
Annual Chair's Report, for the past year's activities; the template is at the below page.
Elect a Chair, Treasurer, Inclusion Officer, and Early Careers Advocate, all essential roles in running the group and other committee members. The role descriptions are online.
Provide a report from the Treasurer to the AGM on the previous year's funds.
Post-AGM, please send your revised Committee, AGM Minutes and Annual Chair's Report to your Coordinator or to groups@bcs.uk to ensure our records are up to date.
We've pencilled this autumn's Convention in for the week commencing 27th September, with sessions at lunchtime and in the evening. Save the week to your calendar, and we will announce the schedule soon.
The annual BCS SPA Software in Practice conference brings together experts and practitioners to share the latest thinking in software development.
Community Forum Basecamp
Come and join the Community on Basecamp. It's a great place to chat with like-minded individuals, share best practice and engage with the BCS Swindon Team.
We currently have 10% of the community represented. However, we want to see an increase in the community's representation, so please encourage at least one of your committee members to sign up.
Become part of our growing Assessor community We are looking to grow our pool of assessors and in return will provide a full training programme to support you.
