Faculty of Health and Care Newsletter

 

We are delighted to announce that Will Smart has been appointed Chair of the Faculty of Health and Care Board. More about Will and his aspirations for the Faculty below. Philip will be remaining as Past Chair for a year to support Will in his new role. 


May was a very busy month for us. A highlight was the Medical Informatics Europe Conference in Glasgow, which was attended by the Faculty of Health and Care, Electronic Health and Care Record SIG and Primary Healthcare Group bursary award winners. We are publishing their reflections on the Faculty LinkedIn page – see link below.

Finally, we have a new cohort of the International Certification for Healthcare CIOs starting in September – booking for places now open!

Will Smart appointed Chair of Faculty of Health and Care Board 

 

We are very pleased to welcome Will as the new Chair of the Board. He brings over thirty years of experience at the forefront of digital transformation in the NHS and the private sector, including three years as CIO for health and care in England.  

 

Will is a BCS Fellow and FEDIP Leading Practitioner and has a longstanding commitment to digital professionalism.  


He tells us that his aim in his role as Faculty Chair is 'to amplify the collective voice of the profession, deepen the Faculty’s links with Government and Industry and to enhance its value to digital professionals across the health and care system’.   

    Call for Abstracts + Conference Announcement – Faculty of Health and Care Conference 2025

     

    We’re excited to announce that the Faculty of Health and Care Conference will take place on 30 September and 1 October at BCS London and online.

     

    This year’s theme is The Future of Health and Care Informatics. We’ve got two packed days planned – keynote speakers, interactive workshops and a digital innovations showcase on day one, followed by research findings and evidence-based practice on day two.

     

    If you’ve got original research, a case study or an innovative solution to share, we’d love to hear from you. Abstracts selected will be considered for podium and poster presentations, and BMJ Health & Care Informatics will support the publication of chosen abstracts. You can submit an abstract using this form and find out more about the conference here.

     

    Call for Abstracts – BCS Nursing and RCN Digital Nursing Conference 

     

    Join us in shaping the future of digital nursing. We are seeking original research, case studies and innovative solutions in digital nursing to share at our conference. There are three categories: education, research and applied practice. Application is by abstract only and submitted abstracts will be considered for presentation at the conference. Closing date is 25 July 2025. You can submit an abstract using this form.

    International CHCIO – new cohort starting September 2025

     

    Are you a CIO/CXIO or aspirant who wants to distinguish yourself as a digital leader in health and care. Our next cohort of this prestigious programme is starting in September. The CHCIO programme is the first healthcare industry-specific credential developed by CIOs for CIOs. The programme was developed by a group of experienced CIO members of CHIME. You can find out more here or by completing an expression of interest form.

    Medical Informatics Europe (MIE) 2025 – Intelligent Health Systems - from technology to data and knowledge

     

    The conference hosted by BCS in Glasgow was a tremendous success, chaired and co-hosted brilliantly by BCS members Elly Andrikopoulou and Philip Scott. Several bursaries were awarded, and their reflections on the event are being posted as blogs on the Faculty of Health and Care webpages here. Many thanks to Anne Nwaokolo for her blog.

    This event provides an opportunity to take part in interactive workshops and gain insights from NHS leadership teams running high-impact digital programmes.  BCS is supporting a workshop to explain the SPARKED approach and to explore with participants their views on taking forward a collaborative community for standards development.

    We’re exhibiting at HETT 2025 on 7–8 October at ExCeL London — one of the key events in the digital health calendar. Visit us on the stand to explore how BCS is championing professional standards in digital health, and catch a number of our members speaking on the future of workforce, innovation and trust in tech.
