Welcome to our November newsletter! This month we report back on the inaugural Faculty of Health and Care Conference and invite you to get involved in the consultation on your Faculty of Health and Care. We announce the publication of a report on digitising social care and the setting up of a community of practice to share learning in this vital area. We also have an update on the great work with FEDIP to develop an occupational architecture for digital, data and tech roles and a BCS response to the budget 2024.

BCS Faculty of Health and Care Inaugural Conference & Faculty Consultation
It was a full house for the inaugural BCS Faculty of Health and Care conference on 10 October with over 120 people packed into the grand venue of Goodenough College in London. There was an amazing diversity of roles from nurses to cyber security experts, senior managers and future digital leader bursary holders.
The theme was ‘developing the profession to enable transformation’. Highlights included the three key speakers – NHS England CTO and BCS Fellow Sonia Patel, Dan West, CDIO at the Department of Health NI and Helen Thomas, CEO of Digital Health and Care Wales, all speaking about the importance of professionalising the digital health and care profession. Reflecting the diversity of the informatics profession, there were speakers from our sister professional bodies in the Federation for Informatics Professionals (FEDIP), a social care focus and an international perspective through an update on EU and international patient record sharing and associated standards.
There was a lively discussion about the Faculty aims, activities and priorities. A write up of the feedback will be made available shortly and we welcome your views on your Faculty. Please contribute to the Discourse conversation here, or complete this survey. The consultation runs until December.
Many thanks to all the BCS volunteers and staff who made the event such a success!
Transforming Adult Social Care Through Digitalisation
Social care is of significant importance to our society as whole, but it is often misunderstood and misrepresented. Despite this, there are significant advances and developments around innovation, digital and data that are closely linked to people’s experience of care. BCS is embarking on a social care digital leaders community of practice. As part of this BCS has commissioned a white paper on the landscape across social care and sets out some of the benefits, challenges and policy asks around what a person centred, tech influenced social care sector looks like. Read the report here.
Budget 2024 – BCS Analysis and Response
BCS has produced an analysis and response to the recent budget, which includes a response on the health and care elements from the Faculty of Health and Care. Read the BCS analysis and response here.
Digital Data and Technology Occupational Architecture
The work on the national occupational architecture continues at pace. Recent additions to the FEDIP job role repository include data analyst, data scientist and data engineer roles, developed with AnalystX and AphA and clinical informatician and CXIO job roles, developed with a multi-disciplinary clinical group with representation from across the four nations. You can find the profiles here. We are keen to have your feedback on the roles and there is a feedback form on the job role profiles page, so please take the time to provide your comments.
Sustainability Apprenticeships
The Sustainable Healthcare Academy is a new, levy-funded green skills programme built by LDN Apprenticeships, and developed in partnership with the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare.
